# Setup

TIP

First time players should visit the Game Intro before jumping into setup and play rules.

# Player assignment

Roll a dice to decide which player controls which Commander.

  • ≤ 3: player who rolled is Habré, FAN Player (initial Government Commander)
  • ≥ 4: player who rolled is Goukouni, FAP Player (initial Rebel Commander)

# Victory Conditions

The game ends immediately if either Habré or Goukouni are eliminated; the player with the surviving Commander is declared the victor.

In the event that both players fail to eliminate the rival Commander, the player who occupies N'Djaména with any type of ground unit by the end of the full year of fighting wins the game. In other words, the Opération Manta scenario lasts a maximum of two Tactical Phases, or six Impulses ("rounds").

# Combat Units Setup

TIP

Combat Units Setup is not needed when playing in the simulator; game pieces are automatically placed. Read the notes below and then skip to play rules.

TIP

Notes

Simulator pieces snap to the center and to the corners of map hexes. By default, snapping favors town names over coordinates, meaning that the pieces are placed low on a hex, covering the hex coordinate, in order to keep town names visible.

Generally, pieces should be placed in the center of the hex. Below are additional placement guidelines:

  • Hexes with multiple forces can have the forces each positioned on a corner, rather than stacked together.
  • Commanders and Leaders should probably be separated from accompanying units and placed on a corner for visibility.
  • In order to not confuse what hex an angle piece is positioned on, combat units should be placed at the bottom-left corner and mid-right corner.
  • Non-combat units should be placed on the top-left corner of a hex.

# Domestic forces

Government Forces

Government forces should be placed with the blue side of the game piece facing up.

  • 7 x MRP guerrillas and MRP leader in Moundou 1849

The seven MRP guerrillas are an Independent Guerrilla Faction at the start of the game, meaning that they are controlled by neither player. Place an "IGF" marker on top of the stack to indicate this fact.

  • If attacked by a player, they are immediately activated and controlled by the attacker's rival.
  • Otherwise, the Rebel player attempts to activate them by rolling the dice at the beginning of each Tactical Phase.
